Postpartum
My postpartum doula support is for all parents of young babies, including adoptive or foster parents. You can hire my services right from the start, a few months later if you realise you need extra support, or perhaps when your partner goes back to work.
After the heroic efforts of pregnancy and birth, you are now caring for your baby 24/7. Your hormones are changing and your emotions may be all over the place. Your body needs time to heal and recover. Maybe you have older children who need your attention too. It’s a lot. You’re tired. And why is there so much laundry?

Even if your partner is home with you, chances are you are both exhausted and just trying to grab a snack or a shower in between feeds and diaper changes. Most of us don’t have family nearby who can help on a regular basis, and it can feel awkward to ask friends to help with household chores.

We have such high expectations of ourselves, and I know it can be hard to accept help while you rest. Having extra practical and emotional support at this vulnerable time can be a huge benefit to you and your baby, both short- and long-term.

As your postpartum doula, I’ll be there to make things feel less overwhelming and to give you more time and energy for yourself and your baby.
Here is what I can offer you, in any combination, as needed:
-
Preparation of nourishing meals, snacks, and drinks
-
Household tasks, e.g. tidying, clean kitchen, sweep floor, laundry, shopping
-
Looking after your baby (and/or older siblings) while you take time for yourself (to rest, shower, exercise etc.)
-
Translation between German and English, navigation of the health system, accompanying you to appointments
-
Relaxation techniques & massage, a peaceful atmosphere in your home
-
Support with feeding (breastfeeding, chestfeeding, bottle feeding)
-
Guidance with gentle exercises for your recovery
-
Non-judgemental support of your decisions and parenting; encouragement and reassurance
-
Empathy, validation of your feelings, and plenty of time to talk
-
Reflection on your birth experience and your feelings about it. After a difficult birth, trauma-sensitive support and guidance
-
Gentle guidance and information to help you problem solve and learn new skills

-
Adult conversation and company to counter feelings of isolation
-
Recommendations and help to find further support and resources
-
Baby bonding bath (Babyheilbad by Brigitte Meissner) to encourage bonding between you and your baby, especially after a C-section or a difficult birth
-
Integration of your own cultural or spiritual traditions

-
Capturing some everyday moments on your phone camera, so you have photos with you in them and not just of your baby

Let’s also clarify the difference between a doula and a midwife. A postpartum midwife is a thoroughly trained and experienced medical professional who will take care of your health and recovery after birth, as well as checking your baby’s health and development. She will support you with infant feeding and newborn care and is your first point of contact when you have concerns. A midwife is paid for by your health insurance. A doula can be a wonderful addition to having a midwife, but is not a replacement! As your postpartum doula, I am there to support your well-being and offer an extra pair of hands. Medical check ups and advice are not part of my job and I will always refer you to a midwife for this. A doula is paid for privately. Under certain conditions your health insurance might subsidise the postpartum doula fees.
