Postpartum

My postpartum doula support is for all parents of young babies, including adoptive or foster parents. You can hire my services right from the start, a few months later if you realise you need extra support, or perhaps when your partner goes back to work.

Our society puts such high expectations on new parents, particularly mothers. If we believe what we see on Instagram, we should all be able to have a contented baby, look amazing and have time for self-care, have a perfectly clean house, cook healthy meals, feel connected to our partner, have a social life… and not be crying every day because it’s all too much! With a new baby, I would say it’s actually impossible to manage all these aspects of life at the same time.

After the heroic efforts of pregnancy and birth, and now needing to care for your baby 24/7, you deserve as much rest, nourishment, and gentle, loving care as possible. It really does take a village to raise a child, and it is normal and good to accept help at this time.

Give yourself and your baby the gift of unhurried time to rest and be with each other.

A great investment for my physical and mental health.

Here is what I can offer you, in any combination, as needed:

  • Preparation of nourishing meals, snacks, and drinks

  • Household tasks, e.g. tidying, clean kitchen, sweep floor, laundry, shopping

  • Looking after your baby (and/or older siblings) while you take time for yourself (to rest, shower, exercise etc.)

  • Translation between German and English, navigation of the health system, accompanying you to appointments

  • Relaxation techniques & massage, a peaceful atmosphere in your home

  • Support with feeding (breastfeeding, chestfeeding, bottle feeding)

  • Guidance with gentle exercises for your recovery

  • Non-judgemental support of your decisions and parenting; encouragement and reassurance

  • Empathy, validation of your feelings, and plenty of time to talk

  • Reflection on your birth experience and your feelings about it. After a difficult birth, trauma-sensitive support and guidance

  • Gentle guidance and information to help you problem solve and learn new skills

  • Recommendations and help to find further support and resources

  • Baby bonding bath (Babyheilbad by Brigitte Meissner) to encourage bonding between you and your baby, especially after a C-section or a difficult birth

  • Integration of your own cultural or spiritual traditions

Let’s also clarify the difference between a doula and a midwife. A postpartum midwife is a thoroughly trained and experienced medical professional who will take care of your health and recovery after birth, as well as checking your baby’s health and development. She will support you with infant feeding and newborn care and is your first point of contact when you have concerns. A midwife is paid for by your health insurance. A doula can be a wonderful addition to having a midwife, but is not a replacement! As your postpartum doula, I am there to support your well-being and offer an extra pair of hands. Medical check ups and advice are not part of my job and I will always refer you to a midwife for this. A doula is paid for privately. Under certain conditions your health insurance might subsidise the postpartum doula fees.
